Rialto Square Theatre Terrazzo Refinishing: Volume 3

In Volume 3 of the Rialto Square Theatre terrazzo restoration series, we reached the final and most crucial stage of the project: vitrification. By this point, the terrazzo had already been diamond refinished up to 3500 grit, achieving high-resolution reflectivity and a promising sheen. However, to take the finish to the next level—both in terms of durability and aesthetics—we introduced the vitrification process, which became the highlight of this phase.

The Vitrification Process

Vitrification is an advanced technique that chemically hardens the stone, making it denser and more resistant to foot traffic. This step was vital for the longevity of the floor, ensuring it can withstand the heavy use of a historic venue like the Rialto Square Theatre.

Beyond durability, vitrification enhances the terrazzo’s natural beauty by creating a glass-like appearance, giving the floor remarkable depth and clarity. Since terrazzo is made up of multiple colors and aggregates, this process amplifies its visual impact, making the floor more vibrant and dynamic under different lighting conditions.

Sealing and Burnishing for Extra Protection

After vitrification, we applied Scotchgard Stone Protector, a high-performance sealer designed to preserve the floor’s luster while protecting it against stains and wear. To maximize the effect of the sealer, we used a high-speed burnisher, ensuring it was fully absorbed and bonded to the surface. This final step pushed the sheen to its absolute peak, bringing out the full elegance of the terrazzo.

A Moment of Celebration

With the refinishing complete, our entire team gathered in the grand rotunda hall to celebrate the successful completion of the project. These moments matter—they represent not only a job well done but also the camaraderie and dedication that go into achieving excellence. Seeing the terrazzo restored to its full glory reinforced why we do what we do: preserving history through craftsmanship.
